Katie Badgley, Children’s Librarian for the Genesee District Library, visited with our second graders multiple times in December. She brought in her certified therapy gog, Dasher and talked about dasher had to complete 12 weeks of training in order to become officially certified. Students learned about some of the activities Dasher had to perform and master in order to pass. The students enjoyed reading to Dasher small groups of 4 or 5. Dasher was the center of attention as the students all sat around him and read to him while scratching his ears, rubbing his tummy, or just petting him.
Reading to a therapy dog can have a very positive effect on children’s reading because these dogs increase motivation, interest, are nonjudgmental, improve attention, and reduce stress. Even though students read for 10 short minutes all involved were ear to ear with smiles of pure joy with this experience.
