McMonagle Elementary School received a grant for $1,500 to do a community service project through Youth Genesee Serves. The grant was sponsored by the United Way of Genesee County. Part of the project was having the Jr. Hawk Ambassador students visit the residents of Fostrian Assisted Living twice a month from October thru May, to do various activities with them. The students went with smiling faces and big hearts to make a difference in the lives of the residents that live there. Together with the residents, the students read books, played chair kickball, chair volleyball, table bowling, bingo, arts and crafts, and sang Christmas carols. One of the best gifts we gave them were all of our hugs to show them how much we cared about them.
The other part of our service project was that each class at McMonagle adopted a resident from Fostrian and made them homemade cards and a no-sew blanket. The classes created this labor of love and care so that the residents would be kept warm this winter. Each time the residents look at the blanket, they will be reminded of the students at McMonagle that lovingly created it for them.
